Plaintain Spit Poultice

by Flowers in Hair
June 2nd, 2011

I had 4 tick bites this past weekend. A couple  pulled were nymphs, the tiny pin head ones, off before realizing what they were . The adult deer tick ( with the white dot on the back) on my back didn’t swell much. The tiny ones seem to give me large welts of infection. The last I pulled off I recalled the plaintain spit poultice, went and chewed some up and slapped it on( after removing and burning baby tick). That bite has the least itching and swelling. So the next night I went to the yard and chewed up some plaintain & put it on the 2 infected bites. Then I covered them with bandages to keep it on for awhile. The swelling has gone down immensely. Always try to remember this spit poultice for bites!

Evening Primrose Elixir

by Feathered Friend
June 1st, 2011

evening primrose flowers

I took this free class the other night with herbalist Kiva Rose and I couldn’t believe the recipe in the handout for an Evening Primrose Flower Elixir – so I thought you would enjoy it since you had such beautiful ones at the farm.

Harvest flowers near the time when they open for the most aromatics.

Ingredients

  • Evening Primrose Flowers
  • Raw wildflower Honey
  • Brandy (the better tasting the brandy, the better tasting the elixir)
  • Canning jar/stick

Steps

  • Fill jar with flowers (you can use the whole flowering top)
  • Fill jar 1/3 up with honey, stir until all flowers coated with honey
  • Fill up with Brandy
  • Stir, top off and cover – let sit in dark, cool area for 4-6 week

Uses for:

  • Relaxant nervine
  • Anti-spasmodic
  • Mucus membrane healer
  • Digestive tonic
  • Anti-inflammatory and anodyne for burns (externally)

ENJOY! I want some if you get to make any ;-)

Today I harvested catnip and comfrey and made tinctures using brandy – first time using brandy as I normally use vodka. I also harvested oregano, tarragon, and catnip to dry – Lots more to do!!

Tincture Bases

by Feathered Friend

Many herbalist use either vodka or brandy to make their tinctures – it’s a matter of preference. I have always used 100 proof vodka because it was recommended to me by Susun Weed when I studied with her; however after reading in Matthew Woods book The Book of Herbal Wisdom, that he preferred brandy, I thought I’d give it a chance to see how it might be different – so far the price of the alcohol’s is MUCH different – brandy is much lees expensive and I can purchase in larger quantities!!
