I was planning to make a body butter to try for myself and friends. After looking at several recipes I liked one at learningherbs. The recipe called for a few ounces of hydrosol.
i too, was not sure what this was…
This seems to be basically a collection of the steamed output of what is put in a pot, that falls down again.. Think distillers.
So you take a large pot with a lid. Add a brick, rock or have a steamer insert.
place a bowl over the rock, insert or brick-
Make sure they are clean as the steam will be coming from the water they are in.
Add water to one or two inches to bottom of inserted bowl,
Add your herbs or whatever you want your water to feel like. Many herbs can be used as, lavender , calendula , rosemary, rose petals, neroli (orange)
I used Clementine peels and rosemary for my first one.
put whatever herbs in the 2″ of water, then put the large lid pot on upside down.
make sealed bags of ice to put on the inverted lid.
Let this steam from 2-4 hours until you get a good amount of hydrosol that has fallen into your inner bowl.
you may have to do more than one bag of ice to get enough.
the liquid in the inner collection bowl is clear. what is left in the boiling area isn’t.
you may store your hydrosol in the refridgerater for 6 months.
